Shimenkan is currently one of the poorest places in Guizhou,China. Many people may have never heard of this name. However, a century ago, Shimenkan’s reputation was resounding both at home and abroad. It was once one of the most economically and culturally developed regions in Southwest China.
It is the first co-educational school with bilingual teaching. There are swimming pools and football fields in the school, and many doctors have been trained. There used to be the earliest leprosy hospital in China and the first Miao people’s hospital in China. From the original Miao village to the cultural “Holy Land”, and then back to the remote mountain village, everything that Shimenkan experienced was due to the arrival of a foreigner and the great changes of the times.
